I love hummingbirds—but I’m not the type to spend hours in the garden every week. So when I started planting with them in mind, I focused on easy, low-maintenance flowers that do the work for me.
These plants are bright, beautiful, and beloved by hummingbirds—and the best part? They thrive with minimal effort.
Here are my go-to favorites:
1. Salvia (Perennial or Annual)
Salvia is a superstar in my garden. It blooms for months, thrives in heat, and needs very little fuss. The tubular flowers are perfect for hummingbirds, especially the red and purple varieties.
2. Bee Balm (Monarda)
This native plant explodes with color and is a hummingbird magnet. It spreads year after year and brings a burst of joy with zero replanting needed.
3. Zinnias
I throw down zinnia seeds once in spring, and by summer my yard is buzzing with activity. These colorful annuals bloom for ages and are super easy to grow.
4. Trumpet Vine (Campsis radicans)
This climbing vine produces long, tubular flowers in shades of orange and red. It’s bold, dramatic, and adored by hummingbirds. Just give it a sturdy trellis and a little space to grow wild.
5. Fuchsia (For Containers or Shaded Spaces)
Fuchsia is perfect for hanging baskets and shady porches. The flowers dangle like little bells, and hummingbirds can’t resist them.
6. Black and Blue Salvia (Salvia guaranitica)
If you want low-maintenance drama, this is it. It’s heat-tolerant, comes back every year in many zones, and its deep blue flowers attract hummingbirds like crazy.
7. Coral Honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens)
Unlike invasive honeysuckle species, this native climber is well-behaved and blooms for months. Plus, it looks stunning on a fence or archway.
You don’t have to be a master gardener to make hummingbirds feel at home.
A few well-chosen plants can turn even the laziest backyard into a hummingbird haven.
Water occasionally, deadhead when you remember, and sit back with your coffee while the hummingbirds do the rest.
