Think you need a big yard or fancy landscaping to enjoy hummingbirds? Think again.
With just two pots on my tiny patio, I’ve created a hummingbird hotspot—and it didn’t take much effort, money, or space.
Here’s exactly how I did it:
Step 1: Choose the Right Plants
Each pot contains a mix of hummingbird-friendly flowers that bloom all season long. I picked bright, nectar-rich plants that require minimal care:
Pot #1:
- Red salvia (centerpiece for height and color)
- Trailing petunias (to spill over the edge)
- Verbena or lantana (for dense color and long bloom time)
Pot #2:
- Fuchsia (a shady-loving stunner for hanging or standing pots)
- Calibrachoa (mini-petunias for color and texture)
- Nasturtiums or zinnias (easy, bright, and irresistible to hummingbirds)
Step 2: Add a Mini Feeder
I hung a small hummingbird feeder between the two pots. I make my own nectar (1 part sugar to 4 parts water, no red dye) and clean the feeder every 2-3 days.
The combination of feeder + flowers = a buzzing success.
Step 3: Keep It Simple
These pots live on my patio railing, where I can see them from my kitchen window. I water every few days, deadhead when I remember, and that’s it.
The plants do their job. The birds do the rest.
Why It Works
- The bright blooms and high nectar plants catch their eye
- The feeder gives them a quick energy boost
- The small scale makes it easy to maintain year-round
Whether you live in an apartment, condo, or just don’t want the hassle of a full garden, two pots are all you need to enjoy the magic of hummingbirds up close.
Sometimes, the smallest spaces offer the biggest beauty—especially when filled with color, nectar, and a little love.
